A peasant shirt, kosovorotka, was a very popular item of clothing in the 18th century. It could be worn every day and on special occasions, at home and at work. Men wore shirts to their knees and women wore them to their ankles. The sarafan was either a sleeveless dress or a high skirt with stripes. Girls and young women wore it. The most common type of festive headdress was kokoshnik. It was worn in the 18th and 19th century. The materials used to decorative headdress were gold, silver, pearl and decorative stones. Kokoshniks were very expensive and were handed down from generation to generation. The men’s trousers, made of rough linen, were called portki. Women wore a long woolen skirt called a poneva which dates from the 19th and early 20th century. The poneva was worn by married women. In the winter both men and women wore sheepskin overcoats, usually with fur on the inside, called polushubok. Both men and women wore bast shoes, lapti, which were worn over homespun onuchi – narrow strips of cotton wrapped around the lower leg – and valenki – felt shoes. Are you a keen reader Rebecca? Rebecca: Yes, I love reading but I don’t seem to have much time anymore, but I do have lots of books in my house which I haven’t read yet. Kate: We often hold an emotional attachment to books, keeping them for years, lending them to friends or giving them as presents. But that all may change as in the last few years some major companies have made available millions of books online which can also be downloaded on to electronic readers. Can you explain what electronic readers are? Rebecca: Certainly, an electronic reader is a small hand-held computer capable of storing hundreds of books in electronic form and displaying the pages as clearly as in a real book. Kate: An electronic book or eBook! No. I’m sorry but I just don’t like the sound of that. I love books and the way they feel. I like going into bookshops and buying new books. What do you think – would you prefer to start reading your books on screen? Rebecca: Well – I can see how it would be handy and it would be great not to carry those huge volumes around with me, not to mention freeing up some space in my home. But having said that, I have already spend too much time looking at a computer screen as it is, so perhaps just for the sake of my eyes it wouldn’t be such a good thing. At the moment most people are likely to say they don’t like the idea of reading a book on a computer. Kate: Yes, but the idea still makes me feel quite sad to think of all those wonderful old books being replaced by a modern computer. Are we really going to start speaking about the books we read today as antiquarian? Rebecca: The point is that it’s going to happen in 2 or 3 years time. Kate: I still can’t imagine everyone reading books on computers though. Thanks Rebecca – that’s all we’ve got time for today. Until next time and happy reading! Раздел I. Аудирование. A1. True A2.
